The following recommendations may come in handy if your are thinking of purchasing any of these items. The list was compiled using 50 years of scouting and outdoor activity experience. For the required equipment list on Troop 23 camp-outs please see the Car Camping and Backpacking lists.

Clothing ( remember to buy these a little big):

  • A good, but not too expensive pair of hiking boots
  • A pair of Teva sandals
  • A set of long underwear tops and bottoms
  • A fleece shirt and pants
  • A fleece jacket
  • A rain jacket and pants (waterproof shell type, Gore-tex is best
  • Fleece gloves

Camping /Backpacking Gear:

  • An internal or external frame backpack
  • A good, down-filled sleeping bag (rated at 150, a good bag should last an entire scouting career!)
  • A thermal sleeping pad (Therma -rest brand, backpacking type)
  • A two-man backpacking tent
  • One or two one-quart drinking water bottles (Nalgene brand, large mouth type)
  • A good inexpensive camera (or a couple of disposable cameras)
  • A good, but not too expensive flashlight.
  • A rugged watch.
  • A good compass
